SWIFTS NEED OUR HELP!
One of the sights and sounds of summer, the Swift, has declined by 70%
since 1995 and is now designated as a 'Red List' species, meaning that
it is officially at risk of extinction in the UK.
This massive decline in the population is due to the following reasons:
-
the loss of essential roof nesting sites
-
the application of pesticides has significantly reduced vital insect food
-
extreme weather events are presenting further challenges
Save our Essex Swifts was launched by long-standing Essex Birdwatching Society member, Richard Chew, in April 2026. You can follow them on Facebook by clicking here and you can find their website at saveouressexswifts.weebly.
Are you interested in providing Swift nestboxes on your house?
The Essex Birdwatching Society has recently awarded a grant to Save
our Essex Swifts to begin the implementation of a vital project providing additional nest sites for Swifts in the County. This grant will enable the purchase of Swift nestboxes and call systems to supply to Essex residents for installation on their homes.
For further information on this vital project, or to make an application for some Swift nestboxes and a call system, please contact Richard by email at saveouressexswifts@gmail.com
